Obituary

Austin T. Schussler, 90, of Abilene, TX, passed away September 7, 2022 in Abilene, TX. Visitation will be held Monday September 12 from 5-7pm at North's Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:30am at North's Funeral Home Chapel, with burial to follow at the Texas State Veteran's Cemetery. Military honors will be presented. Services are under the direction of North's Funeral Home 242 Orange Street in Abilene ,TX 79601.

Austin Taylor Schussler was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Austin Taylor Schussler Sr. and Elizabeth Van Dyke-Schussler on December 22, 1931. He received his grade school education in Scarsdale, New York. He graduated from Lasalle Military Acadamy in 1949, then joined the United States Navy in 1952 and served for four years. While stationed in Key West, Florida, he married Joan Bride Hutton of New York in 1952. They then moved back to New York following his service where they raised their family of eight children. Austin, following in his father's footsteps, began his career in the insurance business working for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and then for Mutual of New York where he served as branch manager in Lexington, Kentucky. He also worked for both the Aetna and Guardian Life Insurance companies serving as certified life underwriter.An avid marksman, he loved to hunt, shoot, and collect rifles. Austin especially loved hosting dinner parties where he shared his love of fine wines and food and entertaining. Gardening was another favorite past time and he enjoyed many hours planting and growing flowers.

Austin Schussler was preceded in death by parents: Austin Schussler Sr. and Elizabeth Schussler, as well as his wife and mother of their children, Joan B. Schussler. He was also preceded in death by his wife Roxie Lynn Sikes Schussler in 2020 as well as his sister Carol Schussler Pare of Florida.

Left to cherish his memories are his loving children: Carol Huber of Bonnieville, Kentucky, Cathy Calidonna (Greg) of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Steele Schussler (Linda) of Yorktown Heights NY, Elizabeth Tirado of Cocoa Beach FL, Mark Schussler (Andrea) of Bend, Oregon, Greg Schussler (Sue) of Milton West VA., Monica Bryant (Jim) of Putnam Valley NY, Chris Schussler (Glenda) of Yorktown Heights, NY, 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild as well as a host of extended family and friends.
