She was born on January 5, 1944, in Abilene, Texas, to Edgar and Polly Anna Rister. Barbara was one of ten children. She was preceded in death by her parents and eight of her siblings: Edith Cannon, Mildred Gertrude Ash, Doris Thacker, Geraldine Terry, Ervin Rister, Edgar "Potsi" Rister, Harold Dean "Sonny" Rister, and James "Chubby" Rister. She is survived by her brother, Bill Rister. Music was Barbara's first love, and she shared her extraordinary gift with countless people throughout her life. A talented bass guitarist and an exceptional vocalist, Barbara's voice was often compared to that of country music legend Dottie West. She performed with the Larry Johnson Band, becoming a favorite attraction at the legendary Red Raider, where people came from all around to dance and hear her sing. She lit up every stage she stepped onto, earning the admiration of devoted fans and fellow musicians alike. To those who knew her, Barbara didn't just perform music-she brought it to life. After an accomplished career in music, Barbara pursued a new path by attending real estate school. She became a respected and successful realtor in Lubbock, Texas, working with John Walton Century 21. She built lasting relationships with clients through her integrity, kindness, and dedication, earning a reputation as someone people could trust. Above all, Barbara loved her family. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Kodi Lynn Hinson and Kelli Renae Breshers. She is survived by her children, Gregory Gates, Trace Riley, and Bobby Todd Rains; her beloved brother, Bill Rister; her lifelong friend, Barbara Baucum, who was like family to her; along with many extended family members, dear friends, and countless people whose lives were touched by her music, warmth, and generous spirit. Barbara's life was filled with passion, resilience, talent, and love. Whether she was standing on stage with a bass guitar in her hands or helping a family find a place to call home, she gave her whole heart to everything she did. The world will never be the same without Barbara Rains, and music will never sound quite the same. Though her voice has grown silent, the songs she sang and the love she shared will echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved her forever. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
