Billie Jean (Basinger) Brown August 22, 1928 - October 21, 2025 Billie Jean Brown's life was filled with love, laughter, and family. She passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, at Wisteria Place Long Term Care in Abilene, Texas, where she had lived for the past four years. She was 97. Born on August 22, 1928, in Italy, Texas, Billie was the daughter of John Cleveland and Bertha Lillian (Wolverton) Basinger. She was raised on the family farm, where she thrived and learned the value of hard work. Her parents instilled in her a strong work ethic that shaped her life. Her first job was picking cotton in the fields, and she went on to enjoy a lifetime of steady, dedicated work. She especially loved her years working at the local movie theater and later served for many years as a business and personal secretary for her brother Glen, whom she also cared for during his later years. Billie was close to all her siblings-Ben, Glen, and Johnnie-who preceded her in death. She and her sister Johnnie shared a special bond and even spent their final years together at Wisteria Place. She married Leo Brown, and together they raised their daughter, Ginger Fikes. Although their marriage ended, Billie and Leo remained best friends, talking on the phone most days. She was also preceded in death by Leo and by their beloved daughter, Ginger. Over the years, Billie lived in Waxahachie, Abilene, Dallas, and eventually returned to Abilene. She loved driving-often just to get out on the road-and she delighted in shopping trips to Dillard's with her sister. Billie had a cheerful outlook and a generous heart. She focused on the good in people, and her warmth and humor made her delightful company. She adored her family and her dogs and was always ready to help anyone she could. In her later years, Billie enjoyed listening to Johnny Cash and old-time hymns on her Alexa speaker. She passed peacefully after a long, well-lived life. She was a blessing to all who knew her. Billie is survived by her son-in-law, Gary Fikes, and her grandson, Grant Fikes, both of Abilene. She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews-Cleveland Basinger, Anslie Dysart, Brooke Basinger, John Feaster, Bill Feaster, and Eric Basinger-and by many grandnieces and grandnephews. The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff at Wisteria Place Long Term Care for the loving care they provided Billie during her years there. They are also deeply grateful to the staff at Alpha Omega Hospice for their compassion and support during her final weeks.
