Candace Elizabeth Batteas Simmons 86 died Thursday October 30 2008 in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held on Monday November 3 at 2:00 PM under the direction of North's Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park with Jeff Reid officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 6:00 PM on Sunday November 2 2008 at North's Memorial Chapel 242 Orange. Candace was born November 25 1921 in Wheeler Texas to W.D. Batteas and Oneta Duncan Batteas. She married Edd B. Simmons on August 13 1938 in Roby Texas. She worked in retail sales for several Abilene department stores for many years. She was also a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Edd Simmons in 1982 and an infant brother Alton Leon in 1947. Candace is survived by one son Robert Simmons and wife Collene of Abilene; one daughter Zelma Hunt and husband Cullen of Abilene; four grandchildren: Janyth Ussery and husband Johnny of Nolan Ron Briscoe and wife Betty of Grand Prairie Mike Briscoe and wife Gina of Humble and Kenneth Simmons of Richardson; four great-grandchildren: Joe Bob and wife Crystal Ussery of Brownfield Joanie and husband Kelly Wehba of Nolan Adrian Briscoe of Abilene and Joshua Briscoe of Grand Prairie; two great-great-grandchildren: Hayden and Kason Wehba of Nolan. She is also survived by three brothers: Lester Batteas of Sweetwater J.D. Batteas of Carrollton and Linton Batteas of Cisco; five sisters: Helen Russell and Alene Ebeling of Plainview Viola Fudge of Merkel Doris Gragg and Donnie Cozby of Abilene; and beloved nieces and nephews.
