Carrol D. "Buck" Hood passed away on February 1, 2025. He was born in 1931 in Watonga, OK, to Asberry Neely and Cassie Gertrude Cannon Hood. At the ripe old age of 19, he married the love of his life, Bonnie Sykes, in Watonga, where he pushed her down the street in a wheelbarrow to celebrate. He was a PH3 Aerial Photographer in the U.S. Navy, serving in San Diego, CA, and Adak, AK, during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Buck and Bonnie settled in Abilene, TX, where they raised their four children. Buck was a devoted husband who cherished Bonnie to his final breath. He was a wonderful father and was loved deeply by his children. Buck was a graduate of Abilene Christian University ('73). He was a talented tradesman and loved working with his hands. He spent his professional life working for the City of Abilene, in both the Purchasing and Building & Zoning Departments, and at Abilene Christian University, in various positions, including Regional Director of Development. Buck was a valued member of the Abilene community, where he umpired and coached youth baseball, and visited the sick, elderly and home-bound. He could fix anything and spent much of his retirement restoring his much loved 1929 Model A. Playing music with friends and family was a favorite pastime, and he played his harmonica even in his final months. Buck was a man of great faith and served as an Elder at Woodlawn Church of Christ. Buck was preceded in death by his parents, his ten siblings, and their spouses. Buck is survived by his wife of 74 years, Bonnie; his children, Stephen Hood (Susie), Cheryl Travis (Bill), Karen Blackwell (Bob) and Vicki Madden (Tom); his grandchildren, Sarah Trevino, Wesley Wood, Jenny Campbell, Whitney Rushing, Brittany Blackwell, Ben Blackwell, Connor Madden and Daniel Madden; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and countless beloved nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends whose lives he touched. A visitation will be held Sunday, February 16, 2025 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and a Celebration of Life will take place on Monday, February 17, 2025 at 11:00 am. Both will take place at Hillcrest Church of Christ in Abilene. Interment of ashes will occur at 1:00 pm on February 17, 2025, at Texas State Veteran's Cemetery at Abilene, following a procession from the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider performing an act of kindness for someone in his memory, or making a contribution to Meals on Wheels of Abilene or West Texas Rehabilitation Center.
