Clara Marguerite Allison Screws, age 93, from Little River, TX, passed away October 17, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earnest Allison and Ada Allison and sister, Marie Allison Bennett.
Marguerite grew up in Little River, TX and graduated from Academy High School. She was proud to be an Academy Bumble Bee and always looked forward to attending the annual reunions. After graduation she worked at the General Store which included the ice house and post office. Marguerite also worked as the ticket agent for Arcadia Movie Theater in Temple, TX. She later specialized in business with an emphasis in vocational training, and with her impressive skill set, she was able to land her dream job in Washington, D.C., where she worked in the State Department during the Roosevelt Administration. She would often see Eleanor Roosevelt in the Rose Garden walking the dog. Marguerite had a passion for politics and a donkey collection to commemorate her favorite party. She was the definition of class, integrity and honesty and once received a letter of recommendation from a colleague who described Marguerite as exemplifying the characteristics of a true lady. She moved to Temple, TX during WWII and became an employee for the MK&T Railroad
Station where she was later proposed to by Lt. Charles B. Screws. They married on July 14, 1944 and had two children David Allison and Beverly Pirtle.
The family was stationed in 9 different states and Puerto Rico. In 1968 they moved to Abilene, TX where they resided for 46 years. The happy couple recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Marguerite Screws was surrounded by family when she peacefully entered heaven. She is survived by her husband Lt. Col Charles B. Screws, USAF, (Ret.) son David(Betty) Allison, and daughter Beverly Pirtle; Grandchildren: Katie (Jeff)Elliott, Josh (Tracy) Cochran and Lacy (Jon) Strelec; Great Grandchildren: Kelsey Luthy, Molly Lester, Allison Wonser, Jake Cochran, Lily Lester, Logan Strelec and Harper Reynolds.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday evening in Crawford – Bowers Funeral Home, Temple, Texas. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in Little River Wilson Valley Cemetery. Pall bearers will be: Tom Bennett, Jack Bennett, Brad Bennett, Jon Strelec, Josh Cochran, and Don Latham.
