Claude Huffman, Jr., 92, of Austin, Texas formerly of Abilene, passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2015. Graveside services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Elmwood Memorial Park, with Rev. Dwight Neas officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday evening at North's Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange Street.
Claude was born July, 7 1922 in Abilene, Texas to Claude Huffman Sr., and Gladys Jones Huffman. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942-1946. He attended Hardin Simmons University from 1946 to 1948 where he received a BA degree, with a major in chemistry and math. After graduation he worked as an Analytical Research Chemist of the Department of Interior U.S. Geological Survey, Denver, Colorado from 1948 to 1978. During that time he served as Group Leader, Project Chief and Branch Representative. He published 33 scientific papers, mostly dealing with methods of determination of trace elements in geologic materials.
He married Julia Mae Scott in 1947, and they had one daughter, Claudia.
In his late years, he moved to Austin to be with his daughter, Claudia, but found that he would need the care provided by The Arden Courts in Austin, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Julia Scott Huffman.
He is survived by one daughter, Claudia Gumbert Hubenthal and her husband Ronnie of Georgetown, Texas; two grandsons, Cary Gumbert and Sam Gumbert, and five great-grandsons, Andrew, Zachary, Spencer, Oliver, and Ethan.
Claude lived a wonderful life, and was loved by many people. He will be missed.
