David Graves Stubbeman 72 a long-time Abilene resident died Saturday morning September 11 2010 while putting out flags as part of an Abilene Downtown Rotary Club 9/11 remembrance project. David was born in Midland Texas on August 28 1938 the son of Frank Diedrich Stubbeman and Violet Graves Stubbeman. David grew up in Midland and graduated from Midland High School. He married Sue Edmunda Swenson on August 19 1961 in Fort Worth Texas. David earned a bachelor's degree in 1960 from Southern Methodist University where he majored in English and government. He earned his law degree from the University of Texas Law School in 1963 before joining the United States Navy. David went to Officer Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island and served in the Judge Advocate General Corps. Following active duty David moved to Abilene to join the law firm of Wagstaff Alvis Stubbeman Seamster and Longacre where he practiced for thirty years. David continued his service in the Naval Reserve until retiring in 1996 having reached the rank of Captain. Believing that citzenship was among a person's most important responsibilities David served his community state and country. He was elected Mayor of Abilene from 1984 to 1987 and State Representative in the Texas House for two terms from 1975 to 1978. David was an active member of Rotary and served as District Governor for Rotary International in 2000. He supported a number of charities and served on the board of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center for over 30 years. David was also an active member of First Central Presbyterian Church serving as an elder and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Abilene Country Club and an avid golfer. David is survived by his spouse Sue Edmunda Stubbeman his son William Frank Stubbeman his daughter-in-law Zoe Chui-Kuen Fan his grandchildren Christian Mathew Stubbeman and Sky Keirahs Stubbeman ;daughter Susan Edmunda Stubbeman and partner Daniel H. Marcus his brother Robert Diedrich Stubbeman and wife Marilyn. The Visitation will be held on Monday September 13 2010 between the hours of 5:00pm and 7:00pm at North's Funeral Home 242 Orange Street Abilene Texas 79601. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday September 14 2010 at 2:00pm at First Central Presbyterian Church 400 Orange Street Abilene TX.
