David Kent Thompson, 74, of Abilene, Texas passed away on October 18, 2024 surrounded by his children after a brief battle with cancer. Visitation will be held Tuesday October 29, 2024 from 5-7PM at North's Funeral Home. With a Graveside service Wednesday October 30, 2024 at 1PM at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery. David was born November 20, 1949 in Colusa County, California to Wilmer LaVerne and Kathryn Mae (Shipp) Thompson. He grew up in San Mateo, California, twenty miles south of San Franciso and loved the Pacific Ocean. David served in Vietnam in the Army Security Agency. He enjoyed many reunions with fellow Vietnam Vets. David married Deborah Lee Reynolds on October 3, 1970 in San Mateo, California. While he continued to serve in the Army they moved to Georgia and Texas. Since he married a native Texan, they settled in Texas as soon as he could and he became a life-long Texan. David lived in Abilene for over 50 years. They had two children, Jennifer (Voss) and Brian. David worked for Burroughs/Unisys, Boeing, and retired as a correctional officer for TDCJ. He dedicated many years of service to the Big Country Soccer Association. For over a decade he was a staple at the YMCA, first on State Street and then out at Redbud. He enjoyed the classes, but most of all the friendships with the group that would gather to drink coffee and talk. He always brought cookies and doughnut holes for the group. He also loved bringing cookies to the kids at the Kid's Zone. He will be greatly missed at the Y. David never met a stranger and his family joked he could talk to a brick wall. He was known for his sarcasm and sense of humor. His sarcasm is greatly missed already. For all the years he read the newspaper and joked that his obituary was not in there, well it is finally here. David is survived by his daughter Jennifer (Scott) Voss and son Brian (Kim); Grandchildren: Matt and Kate Voss, Jacoby, Brad, Natalie and Ezra Thompson who all miss their Pop; Siblings: Denise Smith, Doug (Jane) Thompson, Debbie (Parish) Maniar; and many nephews and nieces. David was proceeded in death by his parents, Wilmer and Kathyrn Thompson; and his beloved wife of 46 years, Deborah, whom he greatly missed. The family would like to thank Dr. Ezzell and his office, Dr. Heaven, and all the staff that cared for him at Hendrick Medical Center and Hendrick Rehab Hospital over these last several months. Thank you to Hospice of the Big Country for their help over the last week of his life. A special thanks goes out to the staff at Mesa Springs Healthcare Center for the tender care and compassion you gave to Dad in the short two weeks his was there.
