Donald Lyle McFadden, age 70, of Abilene, Texas, passed away Thursday, November 14th after a hard fought battle with cancer.
Don was born on September 10, 1954 to Guy and Joyce McFadden at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, Texas. Don lived in Abilene most of his childhood except a short time in Mesquite, Texas. He attended Reagan Elementary, Mann Junior High, and Abilene High School.
Don was a proud Abilene High Eagle where he was involved in Business and Industry CTE and was a student referee/official for sporting events. There he made lifelong friends and met the love of his life, Debra Carole Melton. Don and Debbie graduated from Abilene High in 1973. They went on to be married in March of 1974. They just celebrated their 50 year anniversary.
Don and Debbie took some time away from Abilene while Don worked in Snyder and Temple. They soon settled back in Abilene before starting a family in 1979. He then worked for KMART for many years in purchasing, shipping, and receiving. Don also worked for and attended Elmcrest Baptist Church, Wylie United Methodist Church, and River of Life Church. In the end being his own boss was really the goal and in 2004 Don opened Aslan Building Services. Just as planned, this was a family owned and operated business and Don loved it. He and his son ran the business for several years. In 2016, Don decided to slow down and take a position as Purchasing and Procurement with Meers Engineering and then later with Samuel Engineering. He always made friends wherever he worked and brought laughter and smiles to those around him.
Don was an avid Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Green Bay Packers, and Texas Rangers fan.He loved watching sports and sharing that with his kids and grandkids. He loved movies, literature, and music of ALL kinds. He had the most eclectic taste in music and passed that on to all the kids. He enjoyed animals, gardening, fishing, and just being outside. Don loved his wife and his kids, but no one could hold a candle to his three grandkids. He was the best Pops in the world. He supported every endeavor the kids could think of. He never missed an event and he beamed with joy for each of the kids at every step. He was their biggest fan, their own personal Google, their secret keeper, their partner in crime, and their best friend. He has a legacy to be proud of for years to come.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Guy and Joyce McFadden. He is survived by his wife Debra Melton McFadden of Abilene, his daughter Chrissy Cross, and husband Jimmy, of Abilene, and his son Cory McFadden, and wife Hope, of Abilene. Brother Doug McFadden, and wife Rose, of Cocoa, FL. Three grandchildren Drake Fewell, Gray McFadden, and Ever Fewell, all of Abilene.
A memorial will be held at North's Funeral Home Chapel on December 14, 2024 at 10am.
