Dr. Bill J. Dulin passed away on June 26,th 2015 at the age of 80. Bill always followed his own path, and lived a life full of learning and adventure. Bill was born in Wink Texas to Joe McLean Dulin and Ozelia Gray Dulin and grew up in Kermit, Texas. He graduated from Kermit High School in 1953 and from Baylor University in 1956. He was not only the first in his family to go to college, but so excelled in academics that he completed additional studies at U.T. in Austin and obtained MS and PhD degrees in mathematics from Louisiana State University in 1969. In 1960, Bill started working at Texaco as one of the first computer systems engineers. This is where he met the love of his life and best friend, Dianne Flint. His life was dedicated to serving others, and he left his successful job at Texaco to follow his dream to become a teacher. He became an assistant professor at Texas A & M University after receiving his PhD. He was recruited to head the Mathematics Department at McMurry University in 1971 where he later served as the Chair of the Science Division and the Chair of the Computer Science Department. He worked at McMurry for 29 years where he positively impacted hundreds of students. He also worked as a visiting professor at The University of Texas in Austin doing research in Mathematics. His professional memberships included the American Mathematical Association, Mathematical Association of America, Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society, and Big Country Council of Teachers of Mathematics. While working full time, he and his wife started their own residential rental business in 1976, which is still active today. He enjoyed renovating their properties and building new friendships at the Big Country Apartment Association. Bill's passion for helping others was strongly reflected in his social activism. In addition to being an enthusiastic supporter of education, he was actively involved in promoting political change to help mitigate the impacts of poverty, to improve healthcare coverage, and to protect the environment. In the last days of his life, he was delighted to learn that the Affordable Care Healthcare Act had been preserved by the Supreme Court. His life exemplified his beliefs - he choose to live a modest life, making everything (including his cars) last as long as possible. He valued helping others over material possessions and volunteered for the Boy Scouts, Meals on Wheels, the Alameda neighborhood association, and served as a board member of the Abilene Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Bill was an active member of the Democratic Party. Bill loved to be outdoors and enjoyed camping, hiking, and traveling. His family has fond memories of traveling across the country in a 1962 Dodge (without AC) and camping in a 50s era canvas tent. Bill and his wife traveled to Arizona and Mexico to learn about poverty and immigration issues. They also visited Wales to attend their son's wedding and then camped across Europe via Eurail. Bill traveled to Central and South America and Spain to follow his dream to speak fluent Spanish. He is survived by: his wife of 52 years, Dianne; his sons and their wives - Drs. Michael Flint Dulin and Andrea Dulin of Charlotte, NC, and Joseph Richard Dulin and Margot Dulin of Austin, TX; his brother Tommy Dulin of Midland, TX; and Bill's four grandchildren - Josh, Liam, Katie, and Lauren Dulin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either McMurry University or Meals on Wheels. The family appreciates the care provided by the team at Hendrick Medical Center.
