Edith Jaklewicz 89 died on Friday February 25 2011 at Windcrest Alzheimer's Care Center . Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday February 28 2011 at North's Memorial Chapel at North's Funeral Home 242 Orange Street . She will be buried at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio where her husband of 54 years Mathew was buried with military honors in 2001.   Edith whose family was of Hungarian Magyar heritage was born May 5 1921 and raised as a young girl in an area of what is now Czechoslovakia . At age 5 she joined her family in its emigration to the United States to live in New York City . In 1938 she graduated from The Wadleigh High School for Girls which was located in the Harlem district of borough of Manhattan . The school today is known as Wadleigh Secondary School for the Performing & Visual Arts. Edith fondly recalled growing up in the bustling city telling about skipping school with her friends to see shows and singers such as Frankie Sinatra perform.   Like many young women then she had her eye out for a handsome man in uniform and met a Marine Mathew Jaklewicz on the steps of the New York City public library. They married January 17 1947 in the city. The couple soon would live in North Carolina and eventually in Oakland California where she obtained a degree from a community college to become a dental assistant. Their only child Greg was born there in 1958.The military life eventually took them to Hawaii returned them to California and moved the family to Texas in 1967. They made Abilene their permanent home after Mathew retired from the Marine Corps in 1970.Edith was a volunteer in the library at St. Joseph 's Academy then at Central Catholic school. She was involved in Reading Is Fundamental a literacy program for youth and for years showed educational films and manned booths at events to promote the pro-life organization Right to Life. For many years she drove a route for Meals on Wheels. She was active in youth education at Holy Family Catholic Center a mission established at the former Central Catholic campus that in 1976 became an independent parish. Edith enjoyed traveling and with Mathew went to Australia in 1980. On her own she made sightseeing trips in the United States to China and to rediscover her homeplace in Czechoslovakia .   After her husband's death she was able to remain at home under the loving aid of caregiver Ester Hancock until moving to Sears Methodist Center facilities and eventually to Windcrest.
