Elena "Helen" Hernandez, age 92 of Abilene passed away December 1, 2021 at Hendrick Hospice Care. Visitation will be held from 6pm to 8pm, with the rosary starting at 7pm on Sunday, December 5 at North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange Street in Abilene. A funeral mass will be held at 11 am on Monday, December 6 at St. Francis Catholic Church, 826 Cottonwood St., Abilene. Burial will follow at Abilene City Cemetery.
Elena was born on December 30, 1928 in Lubbock, Texas to Odilon and Domitila Hernandez. She worked at Mack Eplens for over 30 years to provide for her family. When she retired she enjoyed starting her day with a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper. She volunteered at the Sears Senior Citizens for over 20 years. Elena was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church. She served as a Religious Education teacher, a member of the Guadalupanas Society and the Parish Council at church. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed spending time with her furry friends Tinker and Jack.
She was preceded in death by her brother Carlos Hernandez.
Elena is survived by four children that she raised as her own, Johnny Lopez (Marti), Anna Lara, Lupe Ryba (Art), and Donna Chacon (Carlos). She was loved by fifteen grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Elena is also survived by her sister-in-law Monie Hernandez, nephew Richard Hernandez (Maria), nieces Robyn LaMar (Douglas), Dawn Beelman (Michael), and Danielle Ohlman (Brian). She was loved dearly by several great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, and great-great nephews.
We would like to thank all the doctors and nurses that took care of our mother over the years. We extend our deep gratitude to Dr. Feliz for his care during the last weeks of our mother's life.
