Obituary

Elsie Leona Carpenter passed away Sunday February 24 2013 at a local nursing home at the age of 105 years after a long illness. Visitation will be Tuesday February 26 th from 5 – 7 p.m. in North's Memorial Chapel 242 Orange St. A funeral service will be Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. in Southern Hills Church of Christ Chapel 3666 Buffalo Gap Rd. with Phil Ware Richard Melton Joe McKissick and Manley Borden officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park 5750 Hwy. 277 South under the direction of North's Funeral Home. The daughter of Robert E. and Josie Cheek Elsie was born on November 15 1907 in Fordyce Arkansas where she was raised and graduated from High School where she later taught school there. She moved to Abilene Texas in 1928. She married Owen Carpenter December 23 1931 in Abilene Texas. She was a Charter member of Southern Hills Church of Christ. Elsie was a devoted church member who loved her church family. She worked for the Western Union in Arkansas and in Texas. She also worked for the Abilene Public Schools in the lunch room at Lincoln Middle School for three years. Her last job was with Hendrick Hospital for fifteen years caring for the new born babies until her retirement at age 70. She loved crocheting and other hand work. She loved to work outside in her flower garden and loved to cook for her family and most of all she loved to spoil her grandchildren. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; Robert E. and Josie Cheek. Her husband Owen Carpenter. One grandson Wayne Douglas Carpenter. One great-grandson Lucas Michael Carpenter . Two great-grandchildren Christopher Wood and Valerie Croy. Five brothers Sam Albert Archie Bill and Herbert Cheek. One sister Val King. Survivors include; three sons Jack D. of Abilene Larry D. Doug and wife Theda of Buffalo Gap. One daughter Jean Wood of Abilene. Grandchildren; Pattie Vallery and husband Bobbie Greg Wood and wife Sherry Mark Wood and wife Jennifer Dennis Carpenter and wife Marie Joe Mike and Tracy Carpenter Don Carpenter and wife Twyla Dwain Carpenter and wife Lalena Thomas Carpenter and wife Cortnie Owen Carpenter and BJ Blosser and wife Jodi. Twenty great-grandchildren and twenty-two great-great-grandchildren. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Online condolences may be made at www.northsfuneralhome.com
