Obituary

Garrett Patrick Robert McMurtrey was born on April 19, 2004, in Lewiston, ID to Wiley Afton and Josie Rene McMurtrey. He passed away in Potosi, TX at the age of 20 on April 28th, 2024. The first 13 years of his life were spent in the Lewis-Clark Valley in the Northwest where he attended schools in the Clarkston School District. At the age of 13, the family relocated to Potosi, TX where he enrolled in Wylie ISD and graduated in 2022. Garrett loved the outdoors - including hunting, fishing, camping, and 4-H. His true passion in life was engines, he loved tractors from an early age. After high school, he enrolled in truck driving school at ACT and obtained his CDL. Garrett loved to help people and spend time with those he loved. He was driven to work on anything with an engine. Always trying to make fast machines faster would bring him peace and put a smile on his face. Dirt bikes, motorcycles, jet skis, all engines...the faster the better. At the age of 16 he landed a job working on a ranch for Jim Davis. It was the first time he got to put his skills running heavy equipment into practice. Life lessons and work ethic were taught to him by his father. Working on the ranch with Jim was one of his favorite memories. Once he graduated, he put his plan into action when he gained employment with Pat's Backhoe Service in Clyde, TX. He quickly became proficient in running dozers, track hoes, backhoes, maintainers, as well as horizontal directional drills. As a testament to his drive and work ethic, he rose to the position of crew leader and assistant foreman. He drove numerous semi-trucks hauling heavy equipment, starting at the age of 18. He had a heart for dirt, passion for learning, as well as the knowledge and maturity of someone twice his age. He earned the respect of all the men that he worked around. A common phrase that was constantly used around him was, "Hey, how old is that guy?" or "Wow! That man is a hand!" In his short time here on earth he impressed all the men he worked around. He was preceded in death by his Great Grandparents, Bill & Ruth Bronkhorst, Grandma Christine and Grandpa Kevin Quinn. Garrett is survived by parents, Wiley and Josie McMurtrey, and sister Payton. Grandparents, Robert and Cheryl Bronkhorst of Clarkston, WA., Grandfather Patrick McMurtrey of Lewiston, ID., Great Grandma Evelyn Arrasmith of Clarkston, WA, Great Grandma Viola Allestad of Missoula, MT, many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and friends.
