George Garcia Stokes, Sr., age 68 passed from this life on Monday, December 27, 2021. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 3, 2022 from 6pm to 8pm with a rosary at 7pm at North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange St. in Abilene. A Funeral Mass will be held at 1pm on Tuesday at St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church, 2525 Westview Dr. in Abilene with Rev. Emilo Sosa officiating. Burial will follow at Abilene City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, George Stokes, III, Matthew Stokes, Rick Stokes, Johnny Ray Stokes, Aaron Stokes and Gabriel Stokes. George was born on May 19, 1953 in Abilene to Alden B. and Linda Garcia Stokes and lived in Abilene his entire life. He was a graduate of Cooper High School and was a Truck Driver for 40 years, but his passion was helping people fight for their civil rights. He never asked for money to help, only a "Thank you" and a handshake. George loved spending time with his grandkids, taking them on long walks, bike riding or just going to the park. If more people were half the man he was, this would be a better world. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Freddie Stokes and Brenda Stokes Tonche. George is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Lydia ; sons, George, Jr. (Brenda), Rick, Sr., Matthew, Sr., and Johnny Ray, Sr. (Christina); brothers, Joe (Lupe), Larry (Amely) and Danny; sisters, Vivian Stokes and Melissa Stokes (Robert); 19 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who he loved very much. The family asks that memorial donations be made in George's memory to, "Meals on Wheels", 717 N 10th St., Abilene, TX 79601.
