On Thursday, December 10, 2020, Gery Carnes passed away at the age of 68. Just like everything else in his life, this was done on his own terms. He lived his life to the fullest and the way he saw fit. This was one of the greatest gifts and lessons given to his children. He loved Harleys, fast cars, cigars, ZZ Top, vintage cinema, and whiskey. Growing up in his household was never dull. Other families might say their children should try to be model citizens. His creed was to do one thing illegal everyday. Be who you are. Do not conform. Other families would have story time. We had loud jam sessions with classic rock blasting. Other families would buckle their children safely in the back seat of their sedan. We rode the corners hard on the back of a Harley. This was not the childhood for the faint of heart, but having a badass for a father was the adventure of a lifetime. He always accepted his children for who they were. This simple act of kindness is more appreciated than any other. Gery was an extraordinarily skilled craftsman. His gifted hands could build anything; a high rise, a custom home, a jewelry box, souped-up Harley or muscle car, even an intricate doll house for his daughter for Christmas. One of the last and most important things he helped build was a model of the Alamo for a school project with his great grandson. Gery was born on May 27, 1952 to the late Burney and Lorene Carnes. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Wanda Carnes, brother Billy Carnes, and sister Deloris Clinton. He is survived by his two daughters, Stephanie Cobb and Aimee Carnes, son-in-law Jay Cobb, step daughter Dawn Custer, brother Roger Carnes, sister Barbara Taggart, grandchildren Heather Cobb, Allyson Hamm, Ben Cobb, Kayde Payne, Cody Payne, Kiersten Custer, and Kaleb Custer, great-grandson Rylan Kubena, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. A life Celebration will be held at a later date yet to be determined. Gery's wishes were to be laid to rest with his beloved wife Wanda, who is currently on an extended vacation with her family in Germany.
