James Francies Jr. 94 or Richardson formally of Abilene passed away Saturday July 27, 2024 in Dallas, Texas. Graveside service will be held Friday August 2, 2014 at 2pm at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery 7457 W. Lake Rd. Abilene TX, 79601. James Francies Jr. was born to Bertha J. and James Francies Sr. in Houston, TX, on June 30th, 1930 in Harris County, in the community of Spring Branch, James Francies Jr. graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He entered the U.S. Army in May 1953 and was honorably discharged in May 1955. James worked various jobs until 1957, when he began a career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., retiring in 1977. He became a historian, notably starting the all-black trail ride and becoming the first black trail boss. James moved from Houston to Prairie View, TX, where he lived for 40 years. After retiring, he relocated to Abilene, TX, where he spent the remainder of his life. James conducted extensive research on blacks of the West, including black cowboys, Buffalo Soldiers, Seminole Indians, and Blacks throughout the region. During a visit to Abilene, he fell in love with the city and decided to stay, making numerous friends. He played a significant role in Black History programs during Black History Month. James met Rev. Iziar Lankford in Houston while living in Prairie View, and they became close friends in Abilene. He remained very active in the community until his eyesight became impaired. James was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha J. and James Francies Sr., his daughter Vivian Huburt,son in law, Hiram Hubert and his son Artis Francies. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Francies, his son Tyrone Francies, his grandsons J. Christopher Hubert, Tanner McCoy and his granddaughters Lacey Francies and Amy Francies., and a host of extended family and friends.
