James Douglas Moore was born in Abilene on January 17, 1942, the youngest son of Lamar Hilliard and Dixie Moore, and baby brother to five older brothers. On January 24, 2022, one week after turning 80, he passed away after a brief illness and was welcomed into the newest foursome on the golf links of Heaven. Services will be held Monday, January 31st, 2022, at 10:00 am at Holy Family Catholic Church, 5410 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, Texas. Burial to follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Memorials may be made in Jimmy's memory to Holy Family Catholic Church. Jim spent most of his life in Abilene, and like his older brothers, began high school at Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, Texas. An excellent athlete, he returned to Abilene in the middle of his junior year hoping to play for the beloved and mighty state-champion Abilene High Eagles. Unfortunately, residency requirements prevented him from that opportunity and his football days were over. He graduated from Abilene High in 1960, and continued his education at McMurry University, graduating with a BBA in 1964. In 1963, he married Tommye Ann Hawkins, and they had three children - Mara, Lee Ann and Doug. Rather than attend law school, he chose to begin working with his brothers in various business ventures and partnerships. Together they owned several Gibson Stores in West Texas and New Mexico, with headquarters located in Sweetwater, Texas. Jim and his family lived in Sweetwater for ten years, where they had a wonderful life and made many lifelong friends. Upon the sale of the Gibson stores, Jim and his brother Ray opened the Holiday Bowl in Sweetwater, where Ray bowled one of his many 300 score games. Jim and the family moved to Abilene in 1977, where he remained involved in several business ventures with his brothers and friends that included the oil and gas industry and real estate. The brothers shared a strong love for each other and loved working together in many different aspects of their life long and varied careers. Perhaps Jim's greatest passions were running and playing golf. Like his father and his brother Rex, he daily logged his miles along with anecdotes and happenings. Many years included 365 days of running! An avid golfer, Jim loved the friendships he formed at Sweetwater Country Club and Fairway Oaks. Together with his friends and brothers, he spent many years playing competitive amateur golf around West Texas. As the story is told, although many tried, no one could dethrone him as the "Long Drive Champion" for many, many years. On January 30th, 1999, Jimmy married again. This time it was his high school sweetheart, Sharon Annette Balfanz Cox. Jimmy and Sharon lived most of their married life in Austin, Texas on Lake Austin. Jimmy and Sharon were often out on their boat exploring the waters and would end up at their most favorite restaurant, Hula Hut. Along with boating on the lake, Jimmy and Sharon enjoyed traveling. Their cruise destinations took them to Europe, Alaska, and Mexico. They also traveled to see family: Bridgette Baumann in New Jersey, Jennifer English in Austin, and John Cox in Colorado, once they moved back to Abilene. Jimmy and Sharon moved back to Abilene, Texas in 2014. Jimmy and Sharon have enjoyed being back to their "hometown". They have attended the 5:30 service every Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church for the past 8 years. Jimmy is survived by his wife, Sharon Moore and her three children, Bridgette Cox Baumann and her husband Brian of NJ, Jennifer Cox English of Austin, TX, Dr. John Thomas Cox II and his wife Pamela of Grand Junction, CO. He is also survived by his first wife Tommye Ann Montgomery of Abilene, TX and their three children, Mara Moore Hobbs and her husband Ronnie of Odessa, TX, Doug Moore and his wife Stormy of Lewisburg, WV, and Lee Ann Moore Heath. Jim had ten grandchildren, Nick Barham, Cooper Barham and his wife Lauren, and Molly Barham, Amy Annette English and husband Walter Eugene Torry Harrion, Samantha Jo Anne English and partner Ian D Montgomery, Cameron Taylor Cox, Alexandria Louise Cox, Lauren Nicole Cox, Madeline Mangiaracina, and Zoe Mangiaracina. He had six great grandchildren, Brooke and Wells Barham, Leila, Juliette, Clara and Walter Harrison. He is survived by his lifelong closest friend and big brother Lee Moore and his wife Rhonda of Buffalo Gap, TX.
