Jeff Wolf, 74, of Abilene, died Feb. 24, 2023. Jeff was born Oct. 29, 1948, in Lampasas. A few months before he started elementary school, his parents moved to Abilene where his father was hired as a cook at Abilene Christian College. Jeff graduated from Abilene High in 1967, and the Monday after graduation, he began work as a summer intern in the newsroom of the Abilene Reporter-News. In the fall of 1967, Jeff enrolled at McMurry College, resuming work as a writer at the Reporter-News during that period. In 1969, he transferred to Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Ky., accompanying five McMurry professors who also moved to that institution. He graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan in 1971 with a B.A. in English, played French horn in the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, and worked for the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer before attending graduate school at the University of Kentucky. He taught English at UK for a year while working on a Thoroughbred farm south of Lexington. Jeff returned to Texas, served as arts and entertainment editor for the Temple Daily Telegram, then completed work on his M.A. in English in December 1980 at Abilene Christian University. He later taught English for four years at McMurry. Jeff married Sue Costello on Aug. 25, 1985, with Dr. Joe Stamey of McMurry officiating, before finding himself back at the Reporter-News in 1988 in a variety of writing and editing roles. He spent the majority of his tenure as editorial page editor and columnist from 1992 through 2005. In that position, he was given many awards by the Texas Associated Press, including first place recognition for editorial writing in 1996, 1997, and 2001, and received the prestigious Headliners Foundation of Texas award for editorial writing in 1997, 1999, and 2000. Jeff is the only writer in the history of Texas journalism to have won the Headliners Foundation award three times. As editorial page editor, his main goals were to boost the arts in Abilene, particularly in the downtown area; to increase reader participation in the Reporter-News by encouraging more letters to the editor; and to promote public health by advocating a successful campaign to make Abilene one of the final cities in the country to fluoridate its water supply. After Sue's multiple sclerosis was diagnosed as terminal in 2007, Jeff left the newspaper to care for her at home, where she died on Aug. 2, 2010.
