Jessie Christene Burks Jones, known to everyone one as Chris, 92, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and unwavering devotion to her family.
Chris was born Jessie Christene Westbrook on December 25, 1933, in Abilene, Texas, to Otis and Verdie Westbrook. She was raised on the Clear Fork of the Brazos, where she developed a deep love for family, faith, and the outdoors. She often shared cherished stories of her childhood growing up along the river, and those memories became treasured gifts to everyone who knew her.
In 1949, Chris married Charles Lloyd Burks, and together they were blessed with three children: Michael Lloyd Burks, Deborah Kay Jones, and Johnny Wayne Burks. After Charles' passing, she later married Rodney Jones, who brought joy, companionship, and happiness back into her life. Chris often said Rodney gave her the best five years of her life before he, too, passed away.
Chris was a faithful member of Northwest Church of Christ and dearly loved her church family. Her faith in God was the foundation of her life. She was known by her family as their prayer warrior, always lifting those she loved before the Lord and never ending a conversation without saying, "I love you."
She retired from M System Grocery Store after many years working in the meat market. Never one to stop caring for others, she spent several years after retirement serving as a caregiver, a role that perfectly reflected her compassionate heart.
Chris found great joy in tending her flower gardens, vegetable gardens, and fruit trees. She loved watching things grow and took pride in the beauty she created around her home.
More than anything, Chris treasured her family. She loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren with all her heart. Her kindness, strength, unwavering faith, and unconditional love will continue to live on through each of them.
Chris was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Verdie Westbrook; her first husband, Charles Lloyd Burks; her second husband, Rodney Jones; her beloved son, Michael Lloyd Burks; her grandson, Jimmy Elton McHorse; her brother and sister-in-law, Arnold and Lola Mae Westbrook; and her sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Dan Royal.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Kay Jones and husband, Craig Jones; her son, Johnny Wayne Burks; her grandchildren, Monica Burks, Angela McHorse, Michael Lloyd Burks, Ashley Hooper, Adam Burks, and Aaron Burks; 12 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, and her beloved church family.
Chris will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her servant's heart, her steadfast faith, and the love she so freely gave. She leaves behind a legacy of prayer, compassion, hard work, and family that will continue for generations. While her family grieves her passing, they rejoice in knowing she is at home with her Lord and Savior, reunited with those she loved who went before her.
