John Gilbert Owens 60 passed away on August 8 2011 at Hendrick Medical Center .  A Memorial Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday August 12 2011 at Lytle South Baptist Church in Abilene .  Pastor Rodney Watson will be presiding. John was born January 12 1951.  He was the son of Jesse James Owens and Sarah Gertrude Hawkins. He was SFC U.S. Army Retired with 35 years of service.  He served with the 101 st Airborn Division/Air Mobile in Viet Nam .  He was a Bronze Star recipient in Viet Nam .  He also served in Kuwait and Iraq .  He was specially selected by America 's Elite Delta Force to be a member of America 's Best.  He was a member of Lytle South Baptist Church in Abilene Texas . He was preceded in death by his mother Sarah Owens and father Jesse Owens of Roanoke Rapids North Carolina .
