Lanny Michael Thornburg was born on July 31, 1959 to Floyde (Chuck) and Trinie Thornburg in Gridley, California. At that time, his parents knew something was not right with him. The doctor told them he had Down's Syndrome and would not live past 16. In those days, most people place mentally challenged children in institutions or mental hospitals but our parents chose to raise him. Dad was in the Air Force and gone overseas a year at a time, so our mother was left to care for 5 kids on her own. Schools for him at that time didn't exist other than a class on some of the bases. He was delayed in talking, ambulating and understanding things. He spent his life walking around with a cup of ice and water each day. He loved chomping on ice! When young, Lanny played with mom's nylon hose, rubber spiders, egg cartons to name a few and when tired of them, he tore them up and threw them on a shelf in his closet which dad constantly cleaned up. He loved the TV show Good Times with "JJ" and the movies Speed, Twister and Superman and watched them over and over. He enjoyed birthdays with cake and ice cream. Lanny attended a MHMR day program with other mentally challenged individuals and would try to get people's lunch boxes. He didn't want the food, he wanted the lunch box to hold, especially igloos. He liked wicker clothes hampers. Lanny always had soft cloth bags in his hands and had a death grip if you tried taking them away from him. He enjoyed going on car rides with the radio on loud, cokes and eating out. He had an ugly dinosaur doll nobody was allowed to play with so the kids would run with it through the house, Lanny not far behind chasing them and smiling. Through life, our drinks were never safe. Lanny hijacked them and empty coke cans were found in the trash. Dad especially was subject to this numerous times. Lanny was so sneaky about it! After dad died in 2018, our grandson stayed at night to help mom and then later another grandson moved in with her. It gave her comfort and helped with the loneliness. Lanny had a lot of health issues through the years. He fell backwards in 2019 causing a compressed back fracture which never healed. He survived a bilateral pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, and other illnesses. As he got older, his speech became less and less. He did make this noise with his mouth we all called his "cricketing". After mom died in April 2021, he moved in with myself and my husband. Lanny began having grand mal seizures after she died. Doctors said from sleep apnea but I feel he missed mom so much that it may have been part of it. Most mornings Lanny woke with a smile no matter how he was feeling. His lifelong battle of pain is over and his soul is forever in heaven with Jesus our Savior, our dad and mom. He was mom's baby. She always worried about him up until her death. He lived at home all his life. Lanny is survived by myself, (his sister Patti) and husband Rodney Palmer, brother Rick and wife Keri Thornburg, brother Randy Thornburg and wife Janice, sister Denise and husband Joe Tauer and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. A special appreciation and love to Marty, Lauren, Aaron, Tatum, Dimitri and Jessica for caring for Lanny's needs daily, He loved you. We will miss his cricketing and him saying Da Da Da day and night. Thank you to my brothers, my sister and their spouses and our sons and families for being there when you were needed; building a wheelchair ramp, many prayers, medical advice and just listening. Thank you to our neighbors Pam and Michael who always offered to help in any way. But my deepest gratitude goes to my husband who stood by my side and loved him just as much as I did. We will forever miss him.
