Obituary

Leslie Havins Smith, 85, of Abilene, passed away peacefully in her home Thursday, January 22, 2015. Services will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. at North's Memorial Chapel with Gary Stephen officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at North's Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange St. Leslie was born July 19, 1929, in Abilene, Texas, to Lloyd Leslie Havins and Mary Sue (McLean) Havins. Leslie married Billy Ray Smith on June 18, 1950, and they were married for twenty-eight years before his death on August 13, 1978. Leslie attended Abilene High School and received her BA in History from Abilene Christian College in 1949. Leslie was a homemaker and she was a member of the Fireman's Wives Auxiliary. She dedicated her life to her family and her church. She had two children with kidney failure. Her son, Kevin Ray passed in February 1969, and her daughter, Karen Ann, whom she spent 20 years being Karen's nurse byway of home kidney dialysis, passed in July of 1993. She taught cradle roll class for many years at S. 11th& Willis Church of Christ, where she was a member. Leslie cared for many of these children in her home, and she was actively involved in her grandchildren's lives being a second mom to them. Leslie was preceded in death by her parents, a husband, two children, a brother, Robert Havins, and a sister, Mary Sue Awwad. She is survived by a daughter, Karla Lyn and husband Joby Martin of Abilene, a grandson, Michael Martin of Abilene, a granddaughter, Rachel and husband, Chris Moxley, of Goldsboro, NC, and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt Martin and Allison Moxley. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who loved her like a mom. Memorial donations can be made to Sam's Place through the S. 11th& Willis Church of Christ.
