Llewellyn "Lew" Jones Jr. was born June 7, 1947, in Lubbock, Texas, to Lew Jones Sr. and Lorretta Jones. He graduated high school in Anton, Texas, in 1965. He served in the US Army from 1966 – 1970, with one year in Vietnam. Lew married Janis Wilson in November of 1968. Lew and Janis moved to Savannah, Georgia, in 1969, where he finished out his military career. In 1970 Lew and Janis moved back to Texas, where he started on his path to becoming a corporate pilot. His first flying job was with Furrs Cafeteria in 1975 and later Great Plains Construction in Lubbock, Texas. In 1983 began his 20+ years with Pride Refinery in Abilene, Texas. After the Refinery closed, Lew flew for Lauren Engineering until he finally hung up his wings professionally but continued his love of flying with friends and family throughout the years. His passion for flying started when he was in high school, and after his time in the Army, he fulfilled his dream of becoming a pilot. Lew lived by the quote, "if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life," he said that many times over the years. Anyone who knew him knows he loved flying, and it indeed was his first love. Lew was preceded in death by parents Lew Jones Sr and Loretta Davis Jones and sister Edith Aitken. Lew is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Janis Jones of Abilene; daughters Stephanie Jones of Abilene and Stacie Jones of Dallas; grandsons Joshua Brown of Dallas, Noah Brown of Abilene and Jonah Brown of Clovis, New Mexico; Plus dogs, Fritz and Bandit; and granddog Gypsy. Services will be September 23rd at 12:30pm at North's Funeral Home, with burial ceremony following at 2pm at the Texas Veterans Cemetery.
