Lt. Col. Eugene (Gene) A. Shooter, USAF, Ret., left this earth to be with his Lord on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at the age of 96. Gene had lived in Abilene, Texas since 1957. Visitation with the family will be in Abilene at North's Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange Street on Sunday, May 17th from 5-6 pm, with rosary to follow at 6:00 pm. The funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am Monday, May 18th at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 5410 Buffalo Gap Road, with Father Sam Matthiesen officiating. Interment will be at 12:00 pm at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 7457 West Lake Road in Abilene, reception to follow at the Holy Family Catholic Church. Gene was born in Chesterton, Indiana on December 6, 1918 to John and Angeline Shooter. He attended Purdue University, and entered the Army Air Corp to serve his country during the European theater of WWII. After the war, he transferred to the US Air Force where he went through OCS. Eugene worked as an officer in electronics research, and he was a member of the 96th Bomb wing at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene. He also had over 4000 hours of flight, including extensive B52 missions. He retired from the Air Force in 1965 with 24 years of military service. After his retirement from the Military, he began working as an agent for Prudential Insurance Company, and retired from this career in 1982. Gene worked as a Wood Badge Adult Scout with the Boy Scouts of America for many years. He set up their compass course for the summer camps, and taught many outdoor skills in regards to hiking and outdoor cooking. Gene was a devout member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where he was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Angelina Shooter; his brother Ralph Shooter; first wife, Clair L. Shooter; and wife Wanda G. Shooter. He is survived by his sister; Theresa Kamaryt and husband Don; sister-in-law, Martha Shooter; his children, Eugene A. Shooter, Jr. and wife Gail Robertson, Mary Shooter Real and husband Patrick, Mark Shooter and wife Rhonda, John F. Shooter II, Patrick J. Shooter and wife Kirsten; six grandchildren, Catherine Real Jones, Steven Real, David Real, Cole Shooter, Natalie Shooter Henry, Katy Shooter; six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
