Mamie Alene Gray 99 died on Tuesday June 18 2013. She was a member of Southwest Drive United Methodist Church (formerly Fairmont UMC). She was born October 12 1913 to early settlers in Potosi: C.B. and Lela Bynum. She married Lucian (Shug) Gray on December 16 1933 in Abilene where they lived most of their lives except for fifteen years in Dallas and San Antonio. They moved to Abilene in 1948. She was a Methodist and attended Alamo Heights United Methodist Church in San Antonio where she taught in Church School and was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader for twelve years. Her membership was transferred to Fairmont United Methodist Church when they moved back to Abilene. She was active in many phases of church work. She worked with her husband visiting nursing homes and the home bound members of Fairmont United Methodist Church. They did tape ministry for many years and she was an active member of United Methodist Women. Mamie was employed through the years at Eunice Ann Blouses Thornton's on Leggett Drive and Grissom's Fashion Lane in River Oaks where she was manager and buyer for twenty years before she retired.
Preceding her in death were her husband Lucian of sixty six years; sister Ruby Wiltrout; six brothers: Preston Hoyt J.M. (Pete) A.T. (Babe) Calvin and Bill Bynum; and sisters-in-law: Alma Veda Ina and Doris.
Survivors include her daughter Jean Randolph and husband John; grandchildren: David Floyd Marla Svedeman and husband Steve; great-grandchildren: Shannon and Brian Svedeman step-grandchildren: Terrie Pinkston and husband Ben Jason Randolph and wife Melanie; Step-great-grandchildren: Jordan and Kiran Randolph; sisters-in-law: Pat Bynum and Louise Bynum; also numerous nieces nephews and cousins.
Services will be at Southwest Drive United Methodist Church on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Roy Keith and Pastor Norman Patton officiating. Burial will follow in Potosi Cemetery under the direction of North's Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. at North's Funeral Home 242 Orange Street.
Pall Bearers will be Phil Colwell John Kennedy Tom Warren Leroy King Gregg Schneller and Huey Thrift. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Leon Floyd Ray Howe Roy McCoy and Don Ballard.
