Margaret Jean Whatley Guin Beloved Wife and Mother Margaret Guin passed away peacefully at age 92 at Windsor Assisted Living Community in Celebration, Florida on December 9, 2022. Margie lived a long and fulfilling life, battling the last several years with COPD and Alzheimer's disease. Born in Abilene, Texas on October 22, 1930, Margie was the second daughter of Emmett Morgan Whatley and Anne Mayer (Hicks) Whatley. She was very close to her sister Mary Anne, who passed in Evergreen, Colorado in 2020. Margie was proud of her Whatley heritage and kept in touch with many relatives through the years, enjoying family gatherings in Texas, Alabama, California, and Colorado. After attending Abilene High School, Margie attended the University of Texas, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She married her beloved childhood sweetheart and best friend, Maury David Guin on September 16, 1950. Dave was born on September 10, 1929 in San Angelo, Texas, the son of David Thomas Guin of Abilene, Texas and Geneva Hearne of San Angelo, Texas. The couple cherished a marriage of 63 years. Margie was a lifelong member and served many roles in several Episcopal Churches through the years, including Alter Guild Leader. She married Dave at the Church of Heavenly Rest in Abilene, Texas, and was a member of Saint Mary's in Stuart, Florida. She was also a volunteer at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. A Florida resident in retirement since 1987, Margie enjoyed extensive fishing and cruising trips with Dave to the Florida Keys, Bahamas and along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, from Norfolk to New Orleans. She was a member of the Stuart Sailfish Club and earned her credential with the US Power Squadron. She caught many trophy fish, including marlin, sailfish and swordfish, and was the winner of a bass fishing tournament in Kentucky. Margie served as Chair of the Hospitality Committee of Angler's Cove Homeowner's association on Hutchison Island, Florida Prior to retirement, Margie was an avid gardener with scores of varieties in her rose garden in Lexington, Kentucky. She was a particularly dedicated birdwatcher, with a life-list of over 1,000 documented sightings. She also enjoyed knitting and loved playing bridge with Dave. In later years the Guins enjoyed travel aboard smaller cruise ships to destinations explored by Captain Cook, including Tahiti, Hawaii, Alaska, New Zealand, Australia, Africa, Costa Rica, and South America. Margie's favorite trip was to Africa, where they were able to observe big game and exotic birds. The couple shared interests included lake and deep-sea fishing, birdwatching, hiking, travel, and photography. Margie is survived by daughter Elizabeth Anne (Betsie) Guin in Orlando, Florida, son David Thomas Guin in Nobleboro, Maine, and grandchildren Caroline, Tia, Kelly, Daniel, and Bryan. She is predeceased by her husband Maury David Guin, son Stephen Whatley Guin, and infant son Daniel Morgan Guin. The family requests that memorial donations be made to The Alzheimer's Association, Advent Health Hospice Care of Orlando FL, Heavenly Rest Episcopal Church in Abilene TX, or a charitable organization of your choice. The funeral service will be held at the Episcopal Church of Heavenly Rest in Abilene, Texas on Monday December 19 at 10:00 AM, followed by the burial at Abilene Cemetery.
