The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Those are the words that come to mind when we think of Mario Lomas Sr. But to those of us who will miss him the most, he was simply Dad and Grandpa. We know he is home now as he left this earth on April 18, 2024. A memorial service will be held Saturday May 4, 2024 at 10:30am at Iglesia Bautista Ambler located at 2150 Park Ave., Abilene, TX. Visitation will be held at 10am at the church. Mario Lomas Sr was born to Anita Reyes and Santiago Lomas on January 19, 1940, in Del Rio, Texas. He received his education in Del Rio, Texas, and later lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Abilene, Texas. He was a father to four sons: Mario Lomas Jr, Roberto Lomas, Mark Lomas, and Javier Lomas. Mario enjoyed traveling and spending time with family, whether it was cooking out or watching sports. Besides his love of adventure and family, his other greatest love was golf. Mario was a great storyteller and his favorite story to share with everyone was his and his team's journey to lead the San Felipe High School golf team to the 1957 state win, which was a first for an all-Mexican American team. His story was of such legend that a book was written about it, titled "Mustang Miracle", and just recently Mario's dream came true when the book was adapted into a movie named "The Long Game" which is currently showing in theatres. During his adventurous, long life Mario also got to serve as a caddy in the PGA Tour and alongside his teammates was inducted into the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame. He leaves behind a legacy of perseverance and tenacity even when the odds are stacked against you. Those left to cherish his memory include his sons: Roberto Lomas, Mark Lomas (Maria Esther), and Javier Lomas. His grandchildren: Keith Lomas (Tiffany), Fernando Arriaga, Magdalena Hernandez (Edgar), Mario Lomas, Eduardo Lomas (Diana), Albert Lomas, and Randy Lomas (April). Siblings: Hector, Hortencia, Maria, Armando, and Santiago. Other survivors include his great-grandchildren Brooke Lomas, Edgar Hernandez Jr, Eliana Hernandez, Erin Hernandez, Emma Hernandez, Alexia Lomas, Eduardo Lomas Jr, and Ariella Lomas as well as multiple cousins, nieces, nephews, and family friends. He is preceded in death by his son Mario Lomas Jr. Mario will be missed by all who got to meet him, but his memory will live on in those he leaves behind.
