Martha Ann Whitehurst Young (Nana) 80 died January 28 2011. Visitation with the family will be on Monday January 31st from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at North's Funeral Home 242 Orange Street .  The funeral will be held at the Church of the Heavenly Rest on February 1 st at 2:00 p.m.  Internment will be at Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of North's Funeral Home. The Reverend Luke Back will officiate. Martha was born to Hershel Oliver Whitehurst and Christine Ann Walker Whitehurst in Georgetown Texas on June 2 1930.  The oldest of three girls she grew up in Groesbeck Texas and attended Texas Woman's University majoring in voice and education. She met the love of her life and best friend Robert W. Young while teaching in Corsicana .  They were married in 1953 while Bob was on leave from the Marine Corps.  They moved to Point Loma California where Bob served and she taught school.  After Bob finished his service they moved to his hometown Abilene in 1953 where Martha happily lived the rest of her life.  Martha taught music and then reading in schools all over Abilene retiring after 32 years. She received her Masters in Reading from HSU in 1979. A woman of great passion and enthusiasm she loved God her family her friends her students music and travel.  She was a member of the Church of the Heavenly Rest and St. Marks Episcopal Church.  Martha served her Lord as a layreader member of St. Margaret's Guild Sunday School teacher Choir member and Thrift House volunteer.  She was a member of A.A.U.W. P.E.O. and performed in the Abilene Community Theater. Martha was preceded in death by her parents Christine and Hershel Whitehurst her sister Francis her husband Bob and her daughter Susan. Martha is survived by her sister Caroline Holt and cousin Luanne Wear of Austin; her sons Bill Young and wife Terry Chris Young and wife Patti; grandchildren Jeff and wife Tarah Robert Michael Daniel Andrew and Katie Young; Jessica and husband Milton Taylor; Roderick Turner and six great-grandchildren. Martha loved life and we will miss her.  We want to thank her wonderful caregivers at Southern Meadows: Marti and Addie Wing Joyce Lowery Nicole Lewis Brenda Bagwell and Sheryl Schrabel and the staff of Hospice of the Big Country.
