With profound sorrow, yet immense gratitude for a life richly lived, we announce the passing of Maria Delphina Villarreal-Rangel, affectionately known to all as Mary. Born on July 19, 1957, in Abilene, Texas, to Gilberto and Frances Villarreal, Mary's remarkable journey was defined by an unparalleled dedication, a boundless capacity for warmth, and an infectious vivacity that indelibly touched every life she graced. On October 21, 1972, Mary united in marriage with Cresenso "Chris" Rangel. Their union formed the unwavering foundation of their family, as they diligently nurtured a home filled with love. Within this sanctuary, their four children flourished, becoming the central joy and purpose of their shared existence. Mary dedicated twenty-seven years of exceptional service to the Abilene Independent School District (AISD). Her distinguished career in the crucial nutrition department commenced at Franklin Middle School before transitioning to Mann Middle School, where her contributions proved consistently invaluable. Her profound commitment extended far beyond her professional duties; she cultivated sincere bonds with her colleagues, embracing them as an extended family. She deeply valued the spirit of collaboration and camaraderie that characterized her school environments. Daily interactions with students brought Mary immense joy, particularly encountering her own grandchildren, nieces, and nephews within the school halls. Her naturally compassionate and nurturing disposition quickly earned her the cherished title of "Momma Mary." This affectionate moniker perfectly encapsulated the extensive kindness she generously offered and the profoundly positive impact she had on countless young individuals. Outside her professional life, Mary was a vibrant and ardent supporter of her grandchildren's athletic endeavors. Her spirited presence was a constant fixture, making her their most devoted cheerleader at Northern Little League and various other parks throughout Abilene and Anson. Her deep loyalty also encompassed her beloved sports teams, the Dallas Cowboys and the Abilene High Eagles, whose every game she followed with unyielding passion. Mary's earthly life concluded as she transitioned to eternal rest, reuniting with her beloved husband, Chris Rangel, and her daughter, Yvette Rangel. She was preceded in death by her adored grandparents, Juan and Sara Benitez; her parents, Gilberto and Frances Villarreal; her in-laws, Juan and Teresa Rangel; her brother, Ignacio Miguel Villarreal; her sister-in-law, Cindy Gonzales; and her brothers-in-law, Abundio "Bundy" Rangel and Joe "Chino" Rangel. Her profound and lasting legacy continues through her devoted children: Cresenso "Chris" Rangel and his wife Merina; Sarah Rangel; Matthew Rangel and his wife Lorelaine; Alyssa Rangel and her partner Anthony; and Christian Ramirez. She is also survived by her loving siblings: Mary Elizabeth Villarreal, Cynthia Bernal, Gilbert "Ray" Villarreal, and Kristina Esparza, along with her husband Eric. Mary's cherished memory will live on in the hearts of her fifteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who will perpetually carry her enduring spirit. Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at North's Funeral Home, with a rosary beginning at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 1:30 PM. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Cemetery.
