Mary Frances Self, 98, of Abilene, Texas passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at home surrounded by her family. Visitation will be held Saturday May 24, 2025 from 9:30-10:30AM at North's Funeral Home, with service starting at 10:30AM. Burial will be Tuesday May 27, 2025 at 10AM at Abilene Cedar Hill Cemetery, under the direction of North's Funeral Home. Mary Frances was born December 27, 1926 to William Harry and Mary Oehme Chapple in Ft. Worth. From there the family moved to Abilene in 1942 to join the Oehme family in farming during World War II. After attending Abilene High School, Frances was a switchboard operator with Southwestern Bell Telephone for 5 years. She married James Travis Cooper on June 27, 1948. They were married until his death in 1971. Frances then worked at the switchboard at Hendrick Medical Center, retiring in 1988. When asked what she did at Hendrick, she would cheerfully reply " I talk all day." Frances married Claude Self on October 22, 1983. They were married until his death in 1999. Frances became a member of University Baptist Church in 1942, where she held continuous membership. For several years Frances attended the Church of the Heavenly Rest with her daughters, however, she remained a Baptist at heart. Frances will be remembered for her optimism, gratitude, and love of people. She especially enjoyed her friendships with members of the Love Sunday School Class, Rose Park Senior Center, Monday Friends Anonymous, and St. Margaret's Guild. Frances was always ready to travel, be it a day trip or across country. Frances was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Travis and Claude, brother William Paul and sister Lillian. She is survived by daughters Mary Crymes and Sarah Shelby, granddaughter Frances Shelby and husband Jesse Cross, and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made in Frances' memory to the Church of the Heavenly Rest Outreach or donor's favorite charity. Online condolences can be made at www.northsfuneralhome.com
