Fran was born in Abilene, Texas to Thomas and Helen Horrell on August 20, 1944. She was raised by her mother and her step-father, Vernon Sims, after her father's death in 1946. She attended Ben Milam Elementary School and Lincoln Middle School in Abilene, Texas and graduated from Hawley High School in Hawley, Texas in 1963. She was a proud Bearcat all her life. After High School she attended business college in Abilene. On June 5, 1964 she married George Ronald Young in Abilene. After marrying, she worked for Mack Eplen's Restaurant and fondly remembered her time there. She was always interested in banking and worked for Dyess Federal Credit Union for many years before retiring in 2006. As a teenager, her family lived out at Fort Phantom and she loved to be on the lake with her siblings and cousins. One of her favorite memories was competing in the Miss West Texas Queen Contest in high school. Fran also loved getting to stay home and raise her 3 kids while they were young. Later in life, she loved to attend the activities and school events of all her grandchildren-she was known as "Nana" to many over the years. Fran loved to tell a good joke, visit with her many friends, was a great home cook and baker and never met a stranger.
