Melvin "Mel" Chuck Hing Lum, age 75 passed from this life on Sunday, January 30, 2022. Visitation will be held from 6pm to 8pm with the Rosary at 7pm on Monday, February 14, 2022 at North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange St. Abilene. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, February 15, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 837 Jeanette St, Abilene. Burial with Military Honors will follow at 1pm at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, Abilene.
Melvin was born on April 20, 1946 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Kam Ping and Helen Lum. After graduating from high school Melvin served his country proudly in the U.S. Air Force as a C-130 Loadmaster until his retirement in 1984 and went on to a second career with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a Member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church who loved building and admiring his model airplane collection. Melvin was begrudgingly forced by his wife to become a fan of the Kansas University basketball team.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kam Ping Lum and Helen Wong Lum and his sister Suzanna Pang.
Melvin is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Lum; son, Paul Lum; brothers, Chuck Sing Lum and wife Lorrie, Norman Chuck Ming Lum and wife Lucia and Randall Chuck Funn Lum and wife Ellen; sister, Genevieve Tam Sing; nephews, Brian, Albert, Tony, Andrew, Darren and nieces Pam, Debra, Darlene and Dana.
