Melvin Gerald Meeks 72 of Abilene went to be with the Lord on January 4 2009 at 12:03 a.m. A graveside service will be held at Midway Cemetery 2:00 p.m. Thursday in Hodges Texas with Rich Hardgrove officiating. The family will be with Mr. Meeks at North's Funeral Home 242 Orange on Wednesday evening from 6-7:30. Mr. Meeks was born in Lawn Texas on July 1 1936 to Ovala residents James T. and Floy W. Meeks. Four years after graduating from Midland High School he entered the army where he served his country for six years. He settled in Abilene where he met his wife Linda Kaye and married in 1973. Together they raised Lyndell Lackey and Stephanie K. Walke who between them gave him four grandchildren. He often attended Elmwood Baptist Church and retired from United Supermarket in 1997 having befriended many in the Abilene community. He was a quiet hard working soul. He will be missed greatly by those he leaves behind. His children grandchildren and brother Marshall Meeks of Midland wish him a peaceful journey home.
