Mildred was born January 1 1924 in Abilene Texas to Clifton and Callie Woody. She passed at a local hospital on April 24 2013 at the age of 89. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the old IOOF Cemetery beside her parents and the aunt and uncle who brought her mother and her uncle to Texas from Kentucky. The service will be under the direction of North's Funeral Home with Sandy Sandlin officiating.
She was a member of the Church of Christ. She attended Travis Elementary School and completed Abilene High School in 1941. She also attended Abilene Christian College and Hardin-Simmons University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from TSCW in Denton Texas in 1945. She returned to Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene and in 1954 Mildred completed her Master's Degree in Education. She taught Homemaking at Wingate Carbon and Cross Plains. While at Cross Plains she began teaching elementary school. After four years she returned to Abilene where she taught the next thirty two years at Travis Elementary School retiring in 1983.
"Miss Woody" considered 1983 a "divine alignment special year" in her life because it was her last year of teaching at Travis and it was the first year of teaching at Travis for ex-student Fred (Sandy) Sandlin.
Mildred is survived by three nieces: Arlene Williams of Abilene Karen Watson of Baird Texas and Sandra Runnels of Ft. Worth TX. Also surviving are a few great-nieces and nephews and two special friends: ex-student Bonnie Davis and Madonna Clark each of which came into her life because of her parent's prayers.
