October 10 2009 Octamus Jim Dukes' prayers were answered when he went to join his Lord and Savior. Visitation will be Monday October 12 2009 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at North's Funeral Home 242 Orange St. Abilene Texas. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 am Tuesday October 13 2009 at the Northwest Church of Christ 1141 North Willis Abilene Texas with Larry Cash Jack Wallace and Ian Shelburne officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Cemetery. He was born to Dave and Minnie Faye Dukes on July 31 1917 in Jack County Texas. Lived all over the state of Texas and graduated from Allison High School and received a BA from West Texas State. He married Maxine Street July 18 1943 in Abilene Texas. She preceded him in death on December 27 1990. He married Vera Cash on May 25 1991 in Littlefield Texas and lived in Abilene with her until her death on December 9 2008. He is survived by eight children: Jimmy (wife Cathy) Dukes Clyde Dukes Beth (husband Buddy) Malone and Betty (husband Andrew) Trapp Larry (wife Phyllis) Cash Wayne (wife Sue) Cash Tommy (wife Sherry) Cash Ronnie (wife Mary Beth) Cash. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren 14 great-grandchildren and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents three brothers one sister and one great-grandchild. Jim was a longtime member of the Northwest Church of Christ where he served as elder for 31 years and served as a deacon from 1996 until his death. He was responsible for receiving accounting for and dispensing funds for mission work in Uganda from 1996 until June 2009. He retired from the City of Abilene Fire Department in 1978 after 27 years of service and was a veteran of World War II where he served as a medic. He was an active volunteer at the Christian Service Center for a number of years where he was instrumental in maintaining the food pantry. He received many awards for his volunteer service.
