Joyce was born on March 7, 1926, to Horace Pinkerton and Elsie Pearl Johnson. She grew
up in Abilene with 9 brothers and sisters. She married the love of her life, Wayland E.
Bailey, on February 17, 1949, in Abilene, Texas. Together, they shared 62 wonderful years
of marriage right here in Abilene until his passing in May of 2011. The couple had one son,
Wayland E. Bailey Jr., who proceeded her in death on November 24, 2015, at the age 64.
Joyce dedicated 47 years of her life to working as a bookkeeper and was the proud owner
of her own bookkeeping business. Joyce strived to serve her clients well and many were
called friends. Her strong work ethic and sharp mind carried her well into her later years, as
she continued working until the remarkable age of 95.
She found great joy in life's simple pleasures. Joyce loved spending time at Lake
Brownwood, admiring the beauty of bluebonnets, and watching birds from her kitchen table.
A woman of faith, she lived her life with quiet strength and grace. In her younger years,
Joyce also had a lively spirit-she enjoyed roller skating and was a member of a roller-
skating dance team with her younger sister. Saturday nights were reserved for square
dancing.
Joyce will be remembered for her dedication, her independence, and the warmth she
brought to those around her. Her long and meaningful life leaves behind a legacy of love,
resilience, and faith.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son and all 9 of her siblings.
Left to cherish her memories are numerous nieces, nephews and their families complete
with their children that loved going to her home to see all the knick knacks and Beenie
Babies. Her memory will live on.
