Reable Gooch Reed 95 a longtime resident of Abilene Texas passed away on a sunny autumn day on November 22 2009 in Lubbock Texas where she had resided since 2001. Graveside services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Ross Cemetery in Baird in the Reed family plot. Dr. Philip Christopher will be officiating. Mrs. Reed was the widow of Clayton C. Reed and engineer/bridge designer with Texas State Highway Department who preceded her in death in 2001. Mrs. Reed was born in Callahan County in 1914 to Edmund Benton Gooch and Maude Lee Cora Crossland Gooch who were early pioneers of West Texas. She moved with her family to Hamby Community where she and her five siblings grew up on their family farm. She was Salutatorian of her graduating class at Hamby Schools and attended Hardin Simmons University. Her goal was always to be of service to others and to teach children. After graduation she taught in several small schools around Abilene. She married Clayton Cullen Reed in June of 1936 in Abilene. They built their home on University Boulevard in Abilene in 1945 and lived there for 56 years before moving to Lubbock in 2001. Mrs. Reed returned to Hardin Simmons in 1953 to major in special needs teaching certification. She graduated from Hardin Simmons in 1956 and began teaching at Central Elementary Fannin Elementary and Anson-Jones Elementary for fifteen years in Abilene. Mrs. Reed was especially proud of the years she worked in education. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and First Baptist Church in Abilene where she taught college age young women Sunday school and Bible Study for many years. She served as president of several Abilene organizations including College Heights PTA Abilene Council for Exceptional Children and Abilene Bible Study Club. She was preceded in death by her husband Clayton C. Reed; a granddaughter Lee Ann Swaney a student at West Texas Rehabilitation Center in 1974; brothers Reverend Claude Gooch Edmund Clinton Gooch and Chess Lee Gooch; and sisters Ruby Gooch Martin and Wyvonne Gooch Key. She is survived by a son Milton Reed and wife Jodi of Lubbock; a daughter Barbara Hall and husband Alan Jr. of Las Vegas Nevada; former son-in-law Charlie B. Swaney of Gallatin Tennessee; brother-in-law Bobby Key of Miami Oklahoma; grandchildren Stephen C. Reed of Lubbock Leslie Reed Hyman and husband Matt of Lubbock Susan Swaney of Abilene and Janet Swaney Van Heck of Las Vegas; step grandchildren James ""Buddy"" Garner of Colleyville Texas and Chase Garner of Las Vegas; and great-grandchildren Austin Braxton and Chloe Reed of Lubbock David Van Heck of Las Vegas Marlie Hyman of Midland Brendan Abby and Hunter Garner of Colleyville Jonas and Rowan Garner of Las Vegas. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and her special angels Joyce Dixon Bettie Jordan and Yolanda Ramos.
