Obituary

Robert J. Wright, 90, of Abilene, passed away March 1, 2014. Graveside services with military honors will be Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, followed at 2:00 p.m. by a service and reception at The Church of the Heavenly Rest at 602 Meander Street. We welcome friends to join us at either or both services, which are under the direction North's Funeral Home. Robert was born in Sheridan, New York, in 1923 to Richard James Wright and Isabel French. Robert served in the infantry during WWII, landed in the third wave on Normandy Beach, and spent the later months of the war in a German prisoner-of-war camp. After the war, Robert joined the U.S. Navy Reserve, serving in the Supply Corps, and retired from the Navy as Lieutenant Commander in 1983. Robert completed his degree at Rice University immediately following the war, earned his CPA, and launched a long career in business and finance. An Abilene resident of nearly 40 years, he worked for Dub Wright at Western Marketing before subsequently launching Westico Energy Co., where he was president for 30 years. Family and young people were central to Robert's life. He was a devoted father and grandparent, a Boy Scout volunteer, and an informal mentor to many young people. Robert was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Mary C. Wright; his children, Craig (Cheryl) Wright of San Antonio, Texas, Warren (Dinah) Wright of Houston, Texas, Robyn (Rob) Dunbar of Palo Alto, California, Nancy (Danny) Rimkus of Concan, Texas, and Bill Kosman of Houston, Texas; a sister, Beatrice (Randolph) Honey of Terrell, Texas; thirteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and dear friends, Maria Villegas of Abilene, Texas, and Diane Mickelson of Mesquite, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to The Boy Scouts of America or the Wounded Warrior Project http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/ Online condolences may be made at northsfuneralhome@aol.com
