Susan Day Baucum was born on May 7, 1943, in Victoria, Texas. Susan was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend who touched the lives of many. Susan was a strong and devoted woman who, as a single mother raising four children in the 1960s, worked tirelessly to provide for her family and surround her children with love, support, and guidance. In the 1970s, she worked at Foster Freeze. During the 1980s, she worked in housekeeping in San Pedro, California. In the early 1990s, she worked in housekeeping for the Antilley Motel in Abilene, Texas. In the early 2000s, she worked as a housekeeper for Sears Methodist, and later continued her housekeeping career with Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Texas, where she was known as the "Cake Lady". Susan enjoyed the simple joys in life and cherished every moment spent with her family. She loved working on crossword puzzles, reading her romantic novels, watching wrestling, and staying connected with her brothers and sisters. Her favorite color was red, and she was a devoted fan of Elvis Presley, whose music she truly adored. She also loved country dancing, visiting the casinos, and cheering on her favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys. In her younger years, she especially enjoyed sewing and baking with her grandkids and family, creating memories that will forever be treasured by those who loved her. Susan was known for her strong personality, sarcastic sense of humor, and the way she always spoke her mind. She was never afraid to tell you exactly what she was thinking and believed in giving tough love to those she cared about most. Whether you wanted to hear it or not, Susan would always tell it like it was. Her honesty, humor, and feisty spirit were just a few of the many things that made her unforgettable to everyone who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Trinidad Peralta Hernandez and Elsie Rose McMullen Hernandez; and her siblings, Rose Hernandez, William Hernandez, Russell Hernandez, Robert Hernandez, Andrew Thomas Hernandez, and Johnny Franco. Susan is survived by her loving children, Sharron Baucum, Richard Baucum, Woodrow Baucum, James Baucum, wife Marie Baucum, Vidal Gutierrez, who she lovingly raised as her own, and wife Jill Gutierrez, all of Abilene, TX. She is also survived by her siblings, Robin Hernandez, Cathy Hernandez, Linda Yanez, Steve Hernandez, and Marty Hernandez. Susan leaves behind a large and loving family, including 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom will continue to cherish her memory and the love she shared throughout her life. Her presence, wisdom, unconditional love, and unforgettable spirit will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at 11:00am at North's Funeral Home with burial to follow at Elmwood Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to service.
