Obituary

Travis McKinney was born in Houston, Texas, and a proud graduate of Deer Park High School in the Class of 1961, He passed away on October 5, 2025. He lived a life full of passion, humor, and heart. After graduating high school, he married the love of his life, Charlotte Netterville, in 1963. He soon joined the United States Air Force and served honorably for several years, stationed at Dyess Air Force Base. Following his military service, he worked for many years as a mechanic at Arrow Ford in Abilene, where his love for automobiles found a natural home. Racing wasn't just a hobby for him - it was a way of life. Whether it was Dirt Track Racing, NASCAR, or anything with an engine and a finish line, he was all in. Many weekends were spent at the Abilene Speedway, where he held court in the "War Wagon," telling lies, truths, and sometimes just telling - always with a smile, a story, and a love for the sport and the people around him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Slim and Morene, and the love of his life , Charlotte. He is survived by his children, Kim and James Sullivan of Buffalo Gap, TX; and Frank and Tania McKinney of Abilene, TX; grandchildren Tamara Assenmacher of Buffalo Gap, Brianne McKinney of Abilene, Evelyn Sullivan of Oakland, CA, and Amber and Dan Hackney of Buffalo Gap, TX. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Buffalo Gap Volunteer Fire Department for their care and support over the past few years, Hendrick Hospice Care for the compassionate and loving attention they provided during his final days, and to all who cared for him in his final years. A graveside service will be held Friday, October 24, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to gather and remember a man who lived fully, laughed often, and left the world just a little louder, faster, and more fun.
