Obituary

Wilbert (Bill) Dan Downhour was born in San Angelo, Texas to Wilbert Boris Downhour and Ona Livermon Downhour on July 23, 1944. He passed away Sunday, February 5, 2023 in Abilene, Texas at the age of 78 years. Growing up between San Angelo and Germany, Bill was the son of an Army Sergeant. He attended Angelo State University, before enlisting into the Army. He completed two tours in Vietnam. Returning to Texas after the Army, Bill became a Law Enforcement Officer with the Odessa Police Department. After 20+ years, he retired and went on to continue living his love of the great outdoors. An avid camper and hiker, Bill went on many adventures and grew an interest in astronomy. Planning his camping trips to places for star gazing with his telescopes, Bill caught the attention of park rangers. This lead to his eventual interview and publishing in Texas Monthly. Bill was preceded in death by his father, Wilbert Downhour and his mother, Ona Weaver; and his brother Wayne Downhour. He is survived by his children, Danna Aaron of Midland, John Rike of Odessa, and Douglas Downhour of Odessa. Service will be Thursday, February 16, 2023 at Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, Texas at 1:00 pm. Services entrusted to North's Funeral Home.
