Major William George (Bill) Zavatson, 85, USAF retired of Arlington, formerly of Abilene, passed away Monday, August 7, 2017. A Graveside service will be held at 12:00 P.M. Saturday, August 12, 2017 in Elmwood Memorial Park, with Chaplain Chadwick Potts. Arrangements are under the direction of North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange St. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. Friday evening in North's Memorial Chapel. Bill was born December 13, 1931 in Brownfield, Pennsylvania to George and Helen (Gallo) Zavatson and was raised in the Uniontown area. He graduated from South Union High School in 1949, and went to work for an ice cream plant in Uniontown. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in March of 1952 and was accepted into the Aviation Cadet program. He did his Air Force basic training at Samson AFB in New York. He was assigned to Waco while waiting for a navigation training slot to open. He did his navigation training in Harlingen, Texas for one year, and was commissioned in May of 1954. Soon after commissioning he met Virginia Doris (Ginger) Walker and they married June 12, 1954. In July of 1954, he was assigned to Kelly AFB for two years as a navigator, and transferred to brooks AFB for three years in Management Analysis. He was stationed at Hickham Airfield in Hawaii for three years as a senior navigator. He then served in the Comptroller's office at Scott AFB in Illinois for four years, McGuire AFB in New Jersey for two years, then overseas for two years at CCK, Taichung, Taiwan. Returning back to the United States, he was stationed at Dyess AFB in Abilene, Texas until he retired in April of 1972 after twenty years of service. He began his civilian life working in real estate and management before returning to college for his Bachelor's Degree from McMurray University and his MBA from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene. He worked for several Abilene companies in accounting. He was a member of the Abilene Kiwanis Club with 304 months of perfect attendance, and a life member of the Air Force Association where he served as president of the Abilene chapter, and state vice-president for membership. Bill was preceded in death by his parents. His wife, Ginger, of fifty-eight years. Brothers, John and James. Sister Joann Franklin. He is survived by his son, Michael and wife Toni of Arlington, Texas. Daughter, Karen Walker and husband Scott of Montgomery, Texas. Granddaughters, Kristi Thomas and husband Aaron; Leah Protz and husband, Gregory; Kari Atteberry and husband Justin. Grandson, Walker Parkhill. Great-grandsons, Carter Thomas, Isaac Protz,, Luke Protz and Rylan Atteberry. One great-granddaughter, Peyton Atteberry. The family wishes to give special thanks to the staff and many caregivers at Royal Estates of Abilene and Brookdale Lake Arlington who showed their love and compassion during the past five years.
